I Lose Myself in You

A Portrait Series

This body of work is a meditation on the complexity of identity in marriage, by which I explore my own identity within the context of my relationship with my husband in a series of photographs. In this process, I intended to document DJ as an individual, but I find that his personal identity is so interconnected with mine that it is impossible to document him without also documenting myself. In every image I am there, however subtly. I am there supporting him. I am there admiring him. I am there walking beside him through times of trial and of joy. The images displayed are both serene and melancholic, because the reality behind losing oneself in love is truthfully that: losing oneself. It is easy to romanticize union, but the inevitable price of our identities intricately intertwined is the loss of our personal autonomy, our innate sense of self. It is this dichotomy between intimacy and autonomy that intrigues me. For this series I have chosen to shoot in film due to the intimacy of the chemical processes and the imperfections that sometimes occur. I feel that the labor and patience required in the darkroom mimic that of the labor and patience required to sustain a marriage, while the imperfections reflect the imperfect nature of love.
